At the beginning of 1975, After Shave recorded a demo with two titles : “So you’r gone away” and “Ain’t ready for you yet”.  EMI was going to sign them, as long as they changed their name. So After Shave changed their name to Slick.  EMI dropped them anyways.

slick move

Like a lot of guys I hate to shave, scraping and cutting that stubble for a smooth surface.  Sometimes when done we use After Shave, which happens to be the name of a band from Switzerland, and like shaving itself,  goes Skin Deep, which is the title of their first album. They also released a second record called Strange Feeling which featured a different singer and was a fairly decent album, but this review focuses mainly on their first outing.

Firstly, I like the vocals, Jean – Caude”Cacou” Fontana is listed and plays bass.  There’s something about his voice, kinda high and pained(?).  Additionally, the drums and guitar have a raw, raunchy sound and Pierre – Alain”Pakman” Kessi has some nice slide and sweet leads.  His work has a low-fi sound that I think is cool as hell! The drumming of Rodolphe Baumgartner round out the group, which of course follow the formula of the time:  blues inspired rock.  In conclusion I think you’ll find that these guys offer more than just relief after a good shave!
