Despite the contentions of a crazy wild eyed scientist and a kid the band was not named after Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen.

Mad Dog was a power trio from Bay City Michigan who made a name for themselves, how else, by practicing in the basement (later renting a warehouse), playing very few cover tunes, and slogging it out relentlessly at clubs, bars, road houses, high school dances, and festivals.  Unable to land a record company contract,  the band ended up forming their own label, Fish Head, and released the “617” album independently in 1977.  Aside from sporadic airplay by college radio stations, the album went nowhere.  Obviously main stream radio and most of the world missed out on the bluesy, punky, fuzzy guitar-driven rock of this amazing band (Check out the tunes Detroit Rambler, Goodnight & Cold Steel).  It had to be good - why else would they open for Bob Seger and the MC5?  Mad Dog recorded its 2nd album in 1980 and so far it has not been released. After slugging it out for ten years playing up to 250 dates a year, the band broke up in 1983.
