After the unfortunate death of master vocalist Ronnie James Dio in 2010, the original Dio lineup of drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Vivian Campbell, and keyboardist Claude Schnell (along with vocalist Andrew Freeman) reunited under the appropriate moniker Last In Line to perform the Dio songs they originally recorded. The band's first public performance took place on August 3, 2013 at the Slidebar in Fullerton, California. Every song from Holy Diver was played in addition to five tracks from The Last in Line and two from Sacred Heart. The band began recording original tracks for a new album, Heavy Crown, in April 2014. Holy crap, new 'Dio' music I thought - what could be better? Unfortunately, I was disappointed when the album finally came out. Campbell plays nothing like he did in Dio! Guess I was expecting We Rock, I Speed At Night type of tunes, but they were no where to be found. Instead, we get a more subdued, more radio friendly sound. Instead of Dio era Vivian Campbell, we get Def Leppard era Vivian Campbell. [Edit - after listening again to this album I have to admit that it is a lot better than I gave it credit for. Guess I was just expecting Dio Mark II)! Their second album, II, was released on February 22, 2019, which I think is better than Heavy Crown. Phil Soussan replaces Jimmy Bain as the band's new bassist on this album because, tragically, Bain passed away aboard a cruise ship when the band joined Def Leppard on their 'Hysteria on the High Seas' concert cruise in January of 2016.
