SOUTHERN CROSS
After the great aussie band Buffalo disbanded, guitarist John Baxter and vocalist Alan Milano formed Southern Cross in ’76. Although Baxter left before the release of their one and only album, (as far as I know) some of his songs are on the record.
Although not as raw and raucous as Buffalo, this album still rocks big time and Bruce Cumming provides some awesome tasty guitar in Baxter’s place. Milano’s vocals are cleaner and not as gruff as Buffalo’s Tice, but are still pretty good.
As to their sound, they remind me of the unheralded band Moxy, especially on tunes like “You Need It”. On others “Jessie”, “Harris Street”, there’s a feel of Hughes era Trapeze ( another criminally underappreciated band!)
All in all, Southern Cross’s only album is a good listen, no tune is under four and a half minutes, yet the time flies by pretty fast, so fire up the barbie, crack a cold one, and have a g’time with this one mate!
