Rock Goddess were an all female NWOBHM band formed in Wandsworth, South London, in 1977 by sisters Jody Turner and Julie Turner. The amazing thing is that Jody was 13 and Julie was 9 when the band formed! Just to keep things in the family, John Turner, their father, was the groups manager (no word as to what role their Mum played). Fortunately, he actually had the credentials to do the job, unlike some other father/managers. Using his musical connections (he owned a music store and rehearsal rooms) he got the band their first gigs, which ultimately led to a spot at the prestigious Reading Festival in 1982. Impressed with their showing at the festival, A&M signed them to a recording contract in 1982. A year later Rock Goddess released their self-titled debut album, which was an adequate example of NWOBHM - nothing overwhelmingly special, but still listenable (Satisfied Then Crucified being the most noteworthy). Unfortunately, their second album, Hell Hath No Fury, wasn't as hard as enjoyable as their debut - they unfortunately settled on a more commercial sound, which was most likely the reason they were never able to emerge from Girlschool's shadow.
ROBSCURITIES ROBSURD FACT:
In 1983 Rock Goddess were set to go on tour with UFO but had to cancel because Julie was still in school, and according to British law, she was only allowed to play six gigs in a row. Since the tour with UFO would have lasted eight days, Rock Goddess had to drop out.
